Wendy Wallace-Garcia was born in Mississippi and then raised in Louisiana. Wendy made the decision to enlist in the Army after feeling inspired by her childhood friend who had previously enlisted with a rewarding experience. Scheduled to leave for basic training in August 2003, Wendy learned that friend had been killed in Iraq shortly before her departure. In the face of fear and adversity, Wendy's desires to get out of her small town and serve in honor of her lost friend were stronger. She served in an aviation unit for 6 years with 2 deployments before getting married and divorced, where she continued her time in service as a single mom of two. Balancing the identities of solider and "mom" wasn't without hurdles, but she made things work until taking her boots off in 2013. In reflection of her experience Wendy states, "My job and the military life really hurt my body and my mind. I have a lot of PTSD from the army and life itself. I have lost both my parents so I am own my own trying to do right by my kids who are now 15 & 20. I loved being a soldier".
Wendy applied for Critical Home Repairs with Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity in 2022. She is currently living with a family friend due to her home being inhabitable. We've partnered with Surplus Americans to help us get her back into her home while her youngest child finishes their high school education. What we can't do alone, we must do together. Join us in thanking SPC Wallace for her service, by helping us welcome her "back home".
This effort is not the first time we've partnered with Surplus Americans to impact a local Killeen veteran... footage from our last partnership effort can be found here.
